Medical Products Portfolio

While traditional PCR uses agarose gels for the detection of PCR amplification at the end point of the reaction, real-time PCR detects PCR amplification at the early phases of the reaction, providing early kinetic measurements and saving more time in the process. Traditional PCR is very time-consuming as results are not obtained immediately; in addition, traditional PCR provides poor resolution (about 10-fold) and has low sensitivity, poor precision, and non-automated. Real-time PCR is fast and sensitive and can detect up to 2-fold change. Real-time PCR makes DNA and RNA quantitation easier and more precise than the traditional method.

With the latest BiographmCT and potential new PET biomarkers,[1] reliable imaging of beta-amyloidplaque in the brain may be possible, providing additional information to aid inthe diagnosis of dementia, potentially slowing disease progression throughearlier care. The most frequently diagnosed form of dementia is Alzheimer’sdisease, which currently affects an estimated 35.6 million people worldwide,with predictions of as many as 115.4 million patients having the disease by2050.[2]

Technical Innovations

With conventionaltechnology, clinicians face the issue of variability in quantitative resultsdue to software and hardware challenges. Intelligently engineered to overcomethese technical and procedural obstacles, the new Biograph mCT is designed tooffer accurate and reproducible quantification in PET•CT imaging by ensuringthat each element of the imaging chain is optimized—with an emphasis on thefinest volumetric image resolution on the market,[3] daily system calibration,accuracy of attenuation correction using automated co-registration algorithms,and more automated, user-independent and reproducible SUV calculation methods fordaily clinical practice.

With Siemens Quanti•QC,daily system normalization can be performed overnight, calibrating and tuningthe system to precisely the right specifications, facilitating consistent andoptimal performance, day after day.

SMART (Siemens Molecular& Anatomical Registration Technologies) address the traditional problem ofinherent scanner drift and inaccurate attenuation correction throughmisregistration of anatomical and functional images. To facilitate accurateattenuation correction and reliable quantitative measurements, the new BiographmCT will feature a unique patient handling system designed to virtually eliminatedifferential deflection as well as Auto Cardiac Registration that automaticallyaligns CT and PET heart images and reduces variability between users. From November 16 to 19, 2011, the attention of health and medical care professionals from around the world will once again focus on Düsseldorf, as the world’s largest medical trade fair, MEDICA 2011, World Forum for Medicine, and COMPAMED 2011, high-tech solutions for medical technology, the leading international trade fair for the suppliers market in medical manufacturing, get underway. Both of these events report a record number of participants, with 4,571 exhibitors from 62 different countries registered for MEDICA 2011. Meanwhile, COMPAMED, which has taken place in parallel to MEDICA since 1992 (COMPAMED runs from November 16 to 18, 2011) boasts 627 exhibitors from 40 different countries this year. In total, MEDICA and COMPAMED 2011 will once again fill all 19 halls at the Düsseldorf Exhibition Centre.

The link between technical applications, instruments, and products and their application in the field of diagnosis and therapy of specific diseases at MEDICA is made by the interaction between the trade fair, with its integrated themed areas and forums such as the MEDICA MEDIA FORUM (telemedicine/medical IT in Hall 15), the MEDICA TECH FORUM (state-of-the-art diagnostics presented from a doctor’s point of view and innovations in medical technology in practical use in Hall 11), the MEDICA VISION (presentation forum of research institutions organized by the BMBF in Hall 3), and the MEDICA PHYSIO FORUM (presentation of physiotherapy applications in Hall 4).

A new addition to the topical program at MEDICA this year is the MEDICA WOUND CARE FORUM in Hall 6. This forum, taking place right in the thick of the action, will present information about current trends and new approaches to treating chronic wounds and will be held each day throughout the fair.

The MEDICA program will also once again feature the regular highlights such as the MEDICA Congress, Germany’s largest interdisciplinary training forum, which attracts several thousand participants each year, and the German Hospital Conference, the largest communication platform for German hospital managers. Under the umbrella of the 34th German Hospital Conference, this year will also see the premier of the EUROPEAN HOSPITAL CONFERENCE. This event, for which 150 participants have already registered, is intended for top decision-makers from European hospitals and will feature contributions from the European Hospital and Healthcare Federation (HOPE), the European Association of Hospital Managers (EAHM), and the European Association of Senior Hospital Physicians (AEMH).

Trend topic “Mobility IT”—a wealth of new products

Among the many new products being presented by the exhibitors at MEDICA, there is also a wealth of software and hardware solutions for what is known as “Mobility IT”. More and more medical applications can be accessed as apps using smartphones or tablets, making the doctor’s spiral notebook increasingly obsolete, as the devices can be connected to hospital information systems and electronic medical records via a wireless link. There are also an increasing number of apps that can be used by the patients themselves. The innovations presented at MEDICA 2011 will include several new products that can be plugged in to a smartphone or tablet to measure the patient’s blood sugar level, their blood pressure or to take their temperature.

Another current trend is for innovations involving process optimization in the operating theater, such as systems for centralized touch-screen control, which even allow the integrated image and video documentation to be controlled with ease by the surgeon.

The innovations presented at MEDICA 2011 will also include a respirator that can make the process of ventilation of the lungs visible, thus enabling the doctor to fine-tune the device settings much more precisely to suit each individual patient. This new innovation is also among the nominations for the brand-new MEDICA Excellence Award, which will be awarded in a number of different categories for innovative solutions aimed at improving the performance of a hospital or medical care center. The presentation of the nominations and the award ceremony of the MEDICA Excellence Award will take place during a gala dinner (by invitation only) on November 17, 2011 at the Congress Center Düsseldorf (CCD South).

COMPAMED in Halls 8a and 8b

COMPAMED 2011 will take place in parallel to MEDICA 2011. At the leading international trade fair for the suppliers’ market in medical manufacturing, which will take place from November 16 to 18, 2011, some 627 exhibitors from 40 different countries will present a broad range of new materials, components, intermediate products, and services including complete contract manufacturing for the medical technology industry. Two integral technical forums, organized by the professional association for microtechnology IVAM (in Hall 8a) and the trade magazine Devicemed (in Hall 8b) will round off the show with a number of lectures, many of which will be in English.

September 28, 2011—TheU.S. Food and Drug Administration has cleared the Kimberly-ClarkPediatric/Child Face Mask designed to be worn in hospitals and healthcarefacilities to help reduce the spread of airborne respiratory tract bacteria,viruses, and other pathogens.

The mask is designed tofit children ages 5 to 12 years. Children do not breathe as forcefully asadults, particularly children with respiratory infections, so the face mask isless resistant to airflow than an adult mask.

“Children are not smalladults,” said Susan Cummins, M.D., chief pediatric medical officer at FDA’sCenter for Devices and Radiological Health. “This pediatric face mask helpsfill an unmet need for medical devices that are specifically designed forchildren’s unique anatomy and growing bodies.”

Performance testsreviewed by the FDA showed that air flow and filtering ability of the mask wereappropriate for children. The mask, cleared on September 23, 2011, includesspecific fitting instructions for the adult who assists the child in using thedevice. Adult supervision of any child wearing a face mask is an importantsafety recommendation.

The mask should not beused on patients showing signs of shortness of breath, chest pain, chestpressure, indrawing of the lower chest wall, dizziness, or confusion.

Luminos Agile’sexamination table can be lowered to 65 cm—hardly taller than an average chair—makingit much easier for elderly patients, patients with mobility issues, andchildren to mount the table. It can then be raised to a maximum of 112 cm, acomfortable height for physicians to perform procedures on patients duringfluoroscopy. No other system currently on the market offers this flexibility oftable height. The table also has a 275 kg capacity and a wide 60 cm openingbetween the table and the detector, making it easier to examine obese andimmobile patients. Patients in wheelchairs can even undergo fluoroscopy examswhile still seated in their wheelchairs: the table is simply tilted 90 degreesand the wheelchair can be positioned between detector and table.

Luminos Agile’s 43 x 43 cmdynamic flat detector provides an image that is up to 116% larger than that ofa conventional 33 cm image intensifier, enabling a wider coverage of anatomicalregions. For example, physicians can examine the entire abdominal regionwithout repositioning the patient or changing the field of view, thus reducingoverall fluoroscopy time and radiation dose. In addition, Luminos Agile canimplement applications from the Siemens CARE (Combined Applications to ReduceExposure) dose reduction program, which can help staff decrease radiationexposure without compromising image quality.

Luminos Agile can becombined with the Ysio digital radiography solution to obtain a comprehensivefluoroscopy/radiography system. Like Superman’s X-RayVision, New Microscope Reveals Nanoscale Details

Physicists at UC SanDiego have developed a new kind of X-ray microscope that can penetrate deepwithin materials like Superman’s fabled X-ray vision and see minute details at thescale of a single nanometer or one billionth of a meter.

But that’s not all. What’sunusual about this new, nanoscale, X-ray microscope is that the images are notproduced by a lens but by means of a powerful computer program.

The scientists report ina paper published in this week’s early online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy ofSciences that this computer program, or algorithm, is able to convert thediffraction patterns produced by the X-rays bouncing off the nanoscalestructures into resolvable images.

“The mathematics behindthis is somewhat complicated,” said Oleg Shpyrko, an assistant professor ofphysics at UC San Diego who headed the research team. “But what we did is toshow that for the first time that we can image magnetic domains with nanometerprecision. In other words, we can see magnetic structure at the nanoscale levelwithout using any lenses.”

One immediateapplication of this lens-less X-ray microscope is the development of smaller,data storage devices for computers that can hold more memory.

“This will aid researchin hard disk drives where the magnetic bits of data on the surface of the diskare currently only 15 nm in size,” said Eric Fullerton, a coauthor of the paperand director of UC San Diego’s Center for Magnetic Recording Research. “Thisnew ability to directly image the bits will be invaluable as we push to storeeven more data in the future.”

The development shouldbe also immediately applicable to other areas of nanoscience andnanotechnology.

“To advance nanoscienceand nanotechnology, we have to be able to understand how materials behave atthe nanoscale,” said Shpyrko. “We want to be able to make materials in acontrolled fashion to build magnetic devices for data storage or, in biology orchemistry, to be able to manipulate matter at nanoscale. And in order to dothat we have to be able to see at nanoscale. This technique allows you to dothat. It allows you to look into materials with X-rays and see details at the nanoscale.”

“Because there is nolens in the way, putting a bulky magnet around the sample or adding equipmentto change the sample environment in some other way during the measurement ismuch easier with this method than if we had to use a lens,” Shpyrko added.

Ashish Tripathi, agraduate student in Shpyrko’s lab, developed the algorithm that served as theX-ray microscope’s lens. It worked, in principle, somewhat like the computerprogram that sharpened the Hubble Space Telescope’s initially blurred images,which was caused by a spherical aberration in the telescope’s mirror before thetelescope was repaired in space. A similar concept is employed by astronomersworking in ground-based telescopes who use adaptive optics, movable mirrorscontrolled by computers, to take out the distortions in their images from thetwinkling star light moving through the atmosphere.

But the techniqueTripathi developed was entirely new. “There was a lot of simulation involved inthe development; it was a lot of work,” said Shpyrko.

To test their microscope’sability to penetrate and resolve details at the nanoscale, the physicists madea layered film composed of the elements gadolinium and iron. Such films are nowbeing studied in the information technology industry to develop higher capacity,smaller, and faster computer memory and disk drives.

“Both are magneticmaterials and if you combine them in a structure it turns out theyspontaneously form nanoscale magnetic domains,” Shpyrko. “They actually self-assembleinto magnetic stripes.”

Under the X-raymicroscope, the layered gadolinium and iron film looks something like baklavadessert that crinkles up magnetically to form a series of magnetic domains,which appear like the repeating swirls of the ridges in fingerprints. Beingable to resolve those domains at the nanoscale for the first time is criticallyimportant for computer engineers seeking to cram more data into smaller andsmaller hard drives.

As materials are madewith smaller and smaller magnetic domains, or thinner and thinner fingerprintpatterns, more data can be stored in a smaller space within a material. “Theway we’re able to do that is to shrink the size of the magnetic bits,” Shpyrkosaid.

The technique shouldfind many other uses outside computer engineering as well.

“By tuning the X-rayenergy, we can also use the technique to look at different elements withinmaterials, which is very important in chemistry,” he added. “In biology, it canbe used to image viruses, cells and different kinds of tissues with a spatialresolution that is better than resolution available using visible light.”

The scientists used theAdvanced Photon Source, the most brilliant source of coherent X-rays in theWestern Hemisphere, at the University of Chicago’s Argonne National Laboratorynear Chicago to conduct their research project, which was funded by the U.S.Department of Energy. In addition to Tripathi, Shpyrko and Fullerton, aprofessor of electrical and computer engineering at UC San Diego, other coauthorsof the paper include UC San Diego physics graduate students Jyoti Mohanty,Sebastian Dietze, and Erik Shipton as well as physicists Ian McNulty andSangSoo Kim at Argonne National Laboratory.

While not a regulatoryrequirement, prior to lifting the voluntary recall, Masimo elected to performadditional testing on Pronto-7 devices and sensors produced at a Masimomanufacturing facility. This additional testing included 474 subjects in threeoutpatient clinic-type environments. The hemoglobin measurements from thePronto-7 and a point of care device using capillary blood (Hemocue) werecompared to hemoglobin measurements from a venous blood sample analyzed on aCoulter counter. The Hemocue showed a bias of -0.1 g/dL and a standarddeviation of 1.6 g/dL, while the Pronto-7 showed a bias of was -0.1 g/dL and astandard deviation of 1.1 g/dL. Based on the clinical results obtained andpositive feedback from clinicians, Masimo has initiated internationalavailability of Pronto-7 in Europe, Middle East, Africa, South America, andAsia (except for countries requiring clearance, such as Japan).
